How to Make Your T-Shirts Look Transparent (Without a Box)

Level: Beginner

With the new introduction of Direct to Garment Printing, printing your image without a box has now become more readily available. This means you can make your
T-shirt designs look more stylish, professional and a step closer to retail quality clothing.

Before you start, buy a copy of an image-editing program like Adobe Photoshop. For those who have not used it before it can be overwhelming at first glance, but after a while you will get the hang of using some of its amazing and powerful features.

1) Import or open your image into photoshop: File > Open > Select Your Image File
(e.g. image.jpg)

If your image is in a JPG format there is a good change its going to have a white box around it, or coloured background colour. In the example above I want to remove the light grey colour around it – so when I upload onto my T-Shirt, it won’t show the box around it. What we want to do is try and get rid of the white box or coloured background around the image.

Then using the eye dropper tool click on the area that you want removed. So in this case I am going to select the grey colour. Then press Ok. You can have a play around with the fuzziness value to see which one works best for you. A value default of 59 works great for this image.

3) Then goto Select Inverse > Edit Copy

What you want to now, is create a new file with your artwork and paste your new selected image into it. Create a new document: File > New > Make sure your background contents is transparent. Then press okay.

Your new file should show the background as being transparent. Now your nearly done. All you have to do is save as either a PNG or a GIF file so that transparently saves when you upload onto a product.

4) Final Step! File > Save for Web > Select either Gif or PNG. Your done. When you upload your file you will see that it will now overlay onto your t-shirt colour without the box behind it.
